The Rural Women Upliftment Society (RWUS), a non-profit dedicated to empowering marginalized communities, has made significant strides in supporting 1,000 women internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Churachandpur, Manipur, through a transformative livelihood project. The initiative, targeting women living in relief camps and rented accommodations, provides material support to weavers, vegetable vendors, artisans, street vendors, and those engaged in small-scale trades such as petrol sales, cooked meat, dry meat, and tea stalls.
As part of the project, RWUS has distributed essential materials to enable these women to restart or sustain their income-generating activities. Ongoing monitoring reveals that approximately 80% of the beneficiaries have successfully generated incomes ranging from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000, marking a significant step toward financial independence and resilience for these displaced women.
However, challenges persist. Some beneficiaries face difficulties continuing their livelihood activities due to health issues, which hinder their ability to work consistently. Additionally, artisans producing traditional Mora (bamboo stools) struggle with marketing their products, limiting their income potential. RWUS is actively working to address these hurdles through continued support and innovative solutions.
Mary Beth Sanate, Secretary of RWUS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to empowering displaced women: “Our goal is to restore dignity and self-reliance for these women. Despite challenges, the progress we’ve seen is inspiring, and we remain dedicated to overcoming obstacles through community-driven efforts.”
